Real-time, Operational Picture For Army
Context:
After lengthy testing in the plains, deserts, and mountains, Project Sanjay’s new Battlefield Surveillance System (BSS) is currently being implemented.

- BSS is a brand-new system being created for the Indian Army as part of Project Sanjay. Its purpose is to give commanders and personnel at all levels a complete, real-time view of the operational environment.
- The system incorporates information from several sensors and inputs, including surveillance centres, sensors, satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), patrols, and inputs on the cross-border movements of opponents.
- The project’s system integrator, Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL), of Ghaziabad, is creating the system. With a success record of over 95%, it has undergone comprehensive validation in the lowlands, deserts, and mountains.
- By December 2025, the system is anticipated to be deployed, with integrated surveillance centres for all field units.
- By connecting with the Artillery Combat Command and Control System (ACCCS), the system will enable the dissemination of an integrated surveillance image to commanders and staff at all levels, completing the sensor-shooter grid.
- The Indian Army is implementing several automation projects, including this one, to increase operational effectiveness, improve battlefield awareness, and provide functional efficiency for human resource management, logistics, inventory management, medical services, and other administrative functions.
- The cost of the BSS project was once projected to be over 2,700 crores, but it has now been reduced to 2,400 crores and is anticipated to decrease much further.
- The Battlefield Surveillance System’s overall goal is to give the Indian Army a thorough, real-time shared operating picture to assist hasty decision-making and improve battlefield awareness at all levels.
