What is the Economic Census?

  • The Economic Census is a comprehensive survey of the Indian economy that involves the enumeration of all entrepreneurial units across the country. These units engage in economic activities, either in the agricultural or non-agricultural sector, related to the production and/or distribution of goods and/or services, not solely for personal consumption.
  • This census provides essential entrepreneurial data crucial for state planning and development, especially focusing on the unorganized sectors of the economy. It operates as a 100% centrally sponsored scheme under the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, Government of India.
  • The Economic Census entails a complete enumeration of all entrepreneurial units situated within the geographical boundaries of the country. Information collected includes data on the number of establishments, employment figures, unpaid/paid workers, female and child workers, ownership details of establishments, utilization of power, registration status of establishments, source of finance, among other relevant parameters.
  • For enterprises with 10 or more workers, the complete address is recorded. The Economic Census has been conducted in the years 1977, 1980, 1990, 1998, 2005, 2013, and the most recent one in 2019 (7th edition).
