The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) celebrated the International Day for Women in Maritime in New Delhi, honoring the significant contributions of women seafarers. This year’s theme, “Safe Horizons: Women in Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety,” highlights the crucial role of women in ensuring maritime safety and security.

• Recognition Ceremony: 27 women seafarers from various maritime institutes and professionals were honored for their dedication and contributions to the field.

• Secretary’s Address: Secretary Shri T K Ramachandran emphasized the vital contributions of women in the maritime sector and stressed the need to create more opportunities for gender diversity.
• Theme Focus: The theme “Safe Horizons” underscores the significant impact of women on maritime safety and their essential role in ensuring safe operations and protecting lives at sea.

• Growing Female Participation: Over the past nine years, the number of women seafarers has increased significantly, reflecting a positive trend towards gender diversity in the maritime sector.
• Rise in Registrations: The Directorate General of Shipping has reported a substantial increase in registered women seafarers, with a 514% rise from 2014 to 2023.
