National Geospatial Policy 2022 – Overview
The National Geospatial Policy 2022 is a citizen-centric policy aimed at developing a robust Geospatial ecosystem in India. It seeks to boost national development, economic growth, and support India’s transition to a digital and information-driven economy using geospatial technologies.
Vision and Goals
- Position India as a global leader in the Geospatial domain.
- Create an innovative, competitive, and self-reliant ecosystem.

- Geospatial infrastructure
- Skilled workforce and knowledge base
- National standards and regulatory frameworks
- Geospatial-based entrepreneurship
Institutional Framework
- Geospatial Data Promotion and Development Committee (GDPDC):
- Apex body to implement and monitor the policy.
- Subsumes earlier National Spatial Data Committee (2006) and GDPDC (2021).
- Functions under the Department of Science & Technology (DST).
Key Milestones
- By 2025: Liberal policy and legal framework for open, value-added geospatial services.
- By 2030:
- High-resolution topographical mapping (5–10 cm accuracy for urban/rural; 50–100 cm for forests/wastelands).
- Digital Elevation Models (DEM) completed nationwide.
- By 2035:
- High-accuracy Bathymetric Data for inland waters and oceans.
- Supports India’s Blue Economy.
National Digital Twin
- A Digital Twin is a real-time virtual replica of physical assets or systems.
- The National Digital Twin ecosystem will consist of interoperable, secure, and dynamic Digital Twins across sectors.
- Aim: Improve decision-making, urban planning, infrastructure monitoring, and emergency response.
DIGIPIN – Geo-Coded Addressing System
- Developed by: Department of Science & Technology in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad.
- Objective: Create a National Addressing Grid using geo-coded PINs.
- Features:
- Logical and direction-based geolocation of addresses.
- Simplifies delivery of public and private services.
- Acts as a base layer for Geospatial Governance.
Significance
- Promotes data democratization, innovation, and efficiency in governance.
- Enables accurate service delivery, urban resilience, disaster management, and smart infrastructure development.
- Strengthens India’s digital capabilities under Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
