Sundarban bird festival

  • The first-ever festival Sundarban bird was organised by the Sundarban Tiger Reserve (STR) division of West Bengal Forest Department.
  • During the festival six teams visited different areas inside the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve.
  • 78 forest birds, six species of waterfowl and 42 species of waders, raptors etc were recorded during the bird festival.
  • 5,065 birds were spotted during the exercise including Eurasian Curlew and Lesser Sand Plover, two threatened bird species of the Sundarbans.

Sundarban Tiger Reserve (STR)

  • The Sunderbans Delta renowned for being the only mangrove forest in the world inhabited by tigers.
  • The name ‘Sundarban’ can be translated to “beautiful forest” and it is believed to be derived from a mangrove tree species ‘Sundari’ (Heritierafomes).
  • It is located south of the Tropic of Cancer.
  • The Indian Sunderbans, cover 4,200 square kilometres and include the 2,585-square-kilometer Sunderban Tiger Reserve.
  • It is also a world heritage site and a Ramsar Site, and are home to about 96 Royal Bengal Tigers (2020).
  • These forests provide home to many rare and globally threatened wildlife species including the estuarine crocodile, Royal Bengal Tiger, Water monitor lizard, Gangetic dolphin, and olive ridley turtles.
