  • It was initiated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2008.
  • National Girl Child Day primarily fights against gender discrimination and aims to promote equality.
  • It also focuses on addressing issues related to
    • Female foeticide
    • Declining sex ratio
    • Gender biases
  • The day apparently underscores the importance ofΒ  the overall growth of girls for societal advancement and strives to create a secure environment for girls

 

Government Initiatives for Girl Child Development

  • Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006: Penalises child marriage.
  • Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012: Addresses child abuse with strengthened implementation rules in 2020.
  • Juvenile Justice Act, 2015: Ensures care and protection for children in need.
  • Mission Vatsalya:
    • Provides child protection services like the Child Helpline and Track Child Portal (operational since 2012).
    • Helps match missing children with those found and housed in Child Care Institutions (CCIs).
  • PM CARES for Children Scheme: Supports children orphaned due to COVID-19.
  • Collaborations with NIMHANS and E-SAMPARK Program: Offers mental health and medical care.
