Climatic Regions of India
Part 1
- A climatic region has a homogeneous climatic condition which is the result of a combination of factors of which temperature and rainfall are the two most important elements.
- Even though the whole of India has a monsoon type of climate, the combination of elements of the weather, however, reveal many regional variations.
Koeppen’s Classification of Climatic Regions
- Koeppen’s Classification of Climatic Regions of India is based on monthly values of temperature and precipitation.
- He recognized five major climatic groups out of which four of them were based on temperature and one on precipitation.
They are
Tropical climates
- In tropical climates the mean monthly temperature throughout the year will be over 18°C.
Dry climates
- In this type of climate, the precipitation is very low in comparison to temperature, and hence, dry.
- If dryness is less, it is termed as semi- arid (S) while if it is more, the climate is called arid(W).
Warm temperate climates
- In this type of climate, the mean temperature of the coldest month fluctuate between 18°C and minus 3°C.
Cool temperate climates
- Here the mean temperature of the warmest month is higher than 10°C, while, the mean temperature of the coldest month is below minus 3°C.
Cold climates
- Here the mean temperature of the warmest month is does not rise above 10°C.
