Strengthen G20 Cooperation During Modi Visit

Strengthen G20 Cooperation During Modi Visit

Context:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India will make an official state visit to the United States on June 22, 2023, which will include a state dinner. This is the first state visit of an Indian leader to the US since 2009.

Point to ponder:

  • The visit aims to underscore the importance of bilateral ties and reaffirm the deep and close partnerships between the two countries.
  • A number of bilateral cooperation areas will be discussed during the visit between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden, including technology, trade, industry, education, research, clean energy, defence, security, healthcare, and deepening people-to-people connections.
  • They will also discuss opportunities to expand and consolidate the Quad engagement, as well as their shared vision for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
  • During the visit, the two countries will reaffirm their commitment to a free, open, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific, as well as their determination to elevate their strategic technology partnership, including in defence, clean energy, and space.
  • Prime Minister Modi and President Biden are expected to explore ways to strengthen India-US cooperation at the G-20 and other multilateral and plurilateral forums during their visit, according to the Indian government.
  • There will be a discussion of education exchanges, climate change, workforce development, and health security between the two leaders.
  • Prime Minister Modi has made more than half-a-dozen trips to the US since becoming Prime Minister in 2014, but this will be his first state visit, a privilege accorded to close friends and allies of the US.
  • In May, Prime Minister Modi and President Biden will also interact multiple times, at the G-7 meetings in Hiroshima, in Papua New Guinea, where both leaders will be on overlapping visits, and at the Quad Summit in Sydney.
