Smart Cities Mission

  • Smart Cities Mission is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme was launched on 25 June, 2015 to promote cities that provide core infrastructure, clean and sustainable environment and give a decent quality of life to their citizens through the application of ‘smart solutions’.
  • ‘Smart city’ is a city which is equipped with basic infrastructure to give a decent quality of life, a clean and sustainable environment through application of some smart solutions.
  • The aim of the Smart Cities Mission is to promote economic growth and improve the quality of life of people through enabling local area development and harnessing technology, especially technology that leads to Smart outcomes.
  • The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in collaboration with the respective state governments is the implementing agency for Smart City Mission.
  • 100 cities have been selected to be developed as Smart Cities through a two-stage competition.

Features

  • The use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is the major aspect of the mission.
  • Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCCs) were set up by the municipalities for this.
  • The ICCCs were set up to coordinate traffic management, surveillance, utilities, and grievance redressal.
  • Out of the 100 municipalities in the Smart Cities Mission, the ICCCs of 70 cities are presently online or operational.
  • Key focus areas of the scheme include construction of walkways, pedestrian crossings, cycling tracks, efficient waste-management systems, integrated traffic management and assessment.
