The 1st India Maritime Heritage Conclave (IMHC 2024) was recently organised by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways to celebrate India’s maritime legacy, contributions to global trade, and future innovations.
Key Highlights of IMHC 2024
- Theme: “Towards Understanding India’s Position in Global Maritime History.”
- Showcasing Maritime Legacy: Exhibitions displayed ancient shipbuilding techniques and navigational tools, highlighting India’s connection to global trade networks.
- Global Participation: Maritime nations like Greece, Italy, and the United Kingdom participated, underlining the international relevance of India’s maritime heritage.
- National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC): Emphasis was placed on the upcoming NMHC in Lothal, which will showcase ancient Indian maritime techniques, including shipbuilding and bead-making.
National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC)
- Location: Lothal, Gujarat, an Indus Valley Civilisation site.
- Objective: To be one of the world’s largest maritime complexes, integrating past, present, and future maritime activities.
- Features:
- 14 museums, including galleries on Lothal Town and Lighthouse Museum.
- Open Aquatic Gallery and Coastal State Pavilions.
- Eco-resorts, theme parks, and a maritime research institute.
