Counter-Drone Technology
Context:
Recently, the Centre announced that India is planning to create a comprehensive anti-drone unit to address the “menace” of unmanned aerial vehicles.

Recent highlights:
- More than 250 drones were detected along the Punjab region of the India-Pakistan border.
- As a part of the border security efforts, the Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS) is under implementation along the borders with Pakistan (2,289 km) and Bangladesh (4,096 km).
Counter-Drone Technology Development:
- Recently, a comprehensive anti-drone system that can detect, identify, and neutralise drones has been developed by DRDO.
- This comprehensive technology is capable of countering various kinds of drone attacks, including soft kill and hard kill of all types.
Defence Research and Development Organisation:
- DRDO works under the Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India, as its R&D wing.
- It was established in 1958 after combining the Technical Development Establishment (TDEs) of the Indian Army and the Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTDP) with the Defence Science Organisation (DSO).
- DRDO’s contributions include developing strategic systems and platforms like Agni and Prithvi series of missiles, Tejas (Light Combat Aircraft), Pinaka (Multi-barrel Rocket Launcher), Akash (Air Defence System), radars, and electronic warfare systems.
