India’s Arguments Against the Formation of Two Counties by China
- Violation of Sovereignty: India categorically stated that it has never accepted China’s illegal occupation of Indian territory in the region, including parts of Aksai Chin, which is part of Ladakh.
- Illegitimacy of China’s Actions: India asserts that the creation of Heโan County and Hekang County in Hotan prefecture does not lend legitimacy to China’s illegal and forcible occupation of Indian territory.
- No Impact on Indiaโs Position: The formation of the new counties will not alter Indiaโs long-standing and consistent position that the region is Indian territory.
- Protest Through Diplomatic Channels: India lodged a “solemn protest” with China, reiterating its sovereignty and opposing administrative measures that aim to consolidate Chinaโs hold on illegally occupied regions.
Aksai Chin:
- Aksai Chin is situated in Eastern Kashmir between China and India.
- It is devoid of human habitation due to its location at high altitude.
- Although China controls this area, it is located at the confluence of three nations: the People’s Republic of China, Pakistan, and India.
History of the Aksai Chin dispute:
- It was divided during the British rule in India through Johnsonโs Line and McDonald Line.
- Johnsonโs Line, which was proposed in 1865, shows Aksai Chin under Indiaโs control. (India’s claim is based on Johnson’s line.)
- McDonald Line, which was proposed in 1893, places it under Chinaโs control.
