Aadhaar Face Authentication & Exam Transparency

Context

  • The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) told Parliament that Aadhaar face authentication will help improve transparency, trust, and accountability in competitive exams.

  • SSC and RRB are already authorised to use it for examinee verification.

What is Aadhaar Face Authentication?

  • Verifies identity by matching live facial image with the photo taken during Aadhaar enrolment.

  • Uses โ€œliveness detectionโ€ (real-time verification via camera).

  • Reduces failures caused by worn-out fingerprints, especially among labourers and the elderly.


Policy & Regulation

  • Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance (SWIK) Rules, 2025:

    • Notified by IT Ministry in January 2025.

    • Enables government and private bodies to seek authentication approvals via SWIK portal.

    • Proposals vetted by UIDAI.

    • ~312 Union & State bodies approved since 2020.

  • Exams:

    • Staff Selection Commission (SSC)

    • Railway Recruitment Board (RRB)

  • Welfare & Employment:

    • EPFO: Aadhaar face ID mandatory for UAN generation

  • Banking & Access:

    • India Post Payments Bank: Adopted for financial inclusion

  • Sports:

    • Sports Authority of India (SAI): Verifies identity of athletes and staff under schemes like Khelo India, TOPS, NCOEs

  • Builds trust in exam processes and reduces impersonation

  • Promotes equity and access by enabling elderly and workers to use facial or iris ID

  • Strengthens Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) integrity
