Upper Bhadra Lift Irrigation Project
- This project launched in 2000, is aimed at irrigating 2,25,515 hectares through micro-irrigation in drought-prone districts of Chitradurga, Chikkamagaluru, Davangere and Tumakuru.
- It will help to recharge ground water tables and provide drinking water by filling 367 tanks with six tmcft water in drought-prone taluks.
- In first stage of the project, upto17.40 TMC of water is lifted from Tunga River to the existing Bhadra reservoir.
- In second stage 29.90 TMC of water is lifted from Bhadra reservoir to Tunnel near Ajjampura, in Tungabhadra sub-basin of Krishna basin.
- Central government gave national project status to “Upper Bhadra Project” in 2020 and hence would receive 60% of funding from the Government of India.
Tungabhadra River
- Tungabhadra is a sacred river in southern India and it flows through the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telengana.
- The Tungabhadra River was known by the name of Pampa in the epic Ramayana.
- It is formed by the confluence of two rivers, the Tunga River and the Bhadra both of which originates on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats.
- It flows towards the east, joins Krishna River and then drains into Bay of Bengal.
- The Historic city ‘Hampi’ is located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River while, Sangameshwaram Temple is located at the confluence of the Tungabhadra and Krishna
- Tunga, Kumudvati, Varada, Bhadra, Vedavathi, and Handri are the major tributaries of the river.
