About Jal Jeevan Mission:

  • JJM aims at suppling 55 litres of water per person per day to every rural household through Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) by 2024.
  • Ministry of Jal Shakti is the nodal ministry for JJM.
  • JJM focuses on integrated demand and supply-side management of water at the local level.
  • This is done through creation of local infrastructure for source sustainability measures as mandatory elements, like rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and management of household wastewater for reuse, is undertaken in convergence with other government programmes/schemes.

It also encompasses:

  • Prioritizing provision of FHTCs in quality affected areas, villages in drought prone and desert areas, Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) villages, etc.
  • Providing functional tap connection to Schools, Anganwadi centres, Gram Panchayat buildings, Health centres, wellness centres and community buildings.
  • Technological interventions for removal of contaminants where water quality is an issue.
  • JJM is a Centrally Sponsored scheme the Centre and states is 90:10 for Himalayan and North-Eastern States and 50:50 for other states, and 100% for Union Territories.

For Mains

The current situation:

  • According to a survey commissioned by the Jal Shakti Ministry, around 62% of rural households in India have fully functional tap water connections within their premises.
  • Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, and Puducherry reported more than 80% of households with fully functional connections, while fewer than half the households in Rajasthan, Kerala, Manipur, Tripura, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram and Sikkim had such connections.
  • Over half (57%) of the sampled households reported purifying water before drinking.
  • Close to three-fourths of households received water all seven days a week and 8% just once a week.
