Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Technology

Context:

Recently, Kerala, in collaboration with IIT Bombay, launched India’s first pilot project to test vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology.

Relevance:

GS-03 (Science and Technology)

Key Highlights:

  • V2G Technology: V2G enables electric vehicle (EV) batteries to supply power back to the electricity grid when not in use.
  • Modes of Operation:
    • Grid-to-Vehicle (G2V): Grid charges the EV battery.
    • Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G): EV battery discharges power back to the grid.
  • Why V2G?
    • Supports renewable energy integration by balancing demand and supply fluctuations.
    • Acts as decentralised energy storage, especially useful during emergencies.
    • Enhances grid stability and energy resilience.
  • Global Leaders in V2G: Countries like the U.S., U.K., and Netherlands compensate EV owners for supplying power during peak hours.
  • India’s Progress:
    • Still in early stages, focusing more on EV charging infrastructure.
    • The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has set up a committee, led by its chairman, to examine reverse charging (V2G).

Prelims Question:

Q. Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology, recently in the news, primarily involves:

A. Using solar panels to charge EV batteries
