Subject: GS III- Indian Economy

Context & Overview

Launched on 25 August 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has completed a monumental decade. Today, it stands as the absolute backbone of India’s digital payments ecosystem and a global benchmark for Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and financial inclusion.

Key Trends & Growth Trajectory (FY17 to FY26)

The past decade has witnessed an unprecedented scale of adoption, transforming everyday consumer behavior across the nation:

  • Transaction Volume: Skyrocketed from 1.78 crore in FY17 to over 24,162 crore in FY26—marking an extraordinary 13,000-fold increase.

  • Transaction Value: Surged from ₹0.07 lakh crore in FY17 to approximately ₹314 lakh crore in FY26, representing more than a 4,000-fold growth.

Core Benefits & Developmental Impact

  • Interoperability & Seamlessness: Provides an interoperable, real-time payment platform supporting seamless transactions across diverse banks and applications.

  • Dual Ecosystem Integration: Facilitates both Peer-to-Peer (P2P) and Peer-to-Merchant (P2M) transactions via a single, unified digital interface.

  • Democratisation of Finance: Reduces dependence on individual proprietary banking apps and bridges the digital divide with low-cost financial services.

  • Financial Inclusion & DPI: Acts as a vital pillar of India’s DPI, drawing unbanked populations into the formal digital financial architecture.

Global Footprint & International Expansion

UPI has transcended domestic borders, establishing its presence globally across 11 countries as a robust cross-border payment mechanism:

  • 2021–2022: Bhutan, Singapore, UAE

  • 2024: France, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal

  • 2025–2026: Qatar, Cambodia

  • Key Milestone: Greece became operational for P2P UPI payments in May 2026.
