About UNESCO:

  • United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) which seeks to build peace through international cooperation in education, sciences and culture.
  • UNESCO is headquartered in the city of Paris, France.
  • It has 193 Members and 11 Associate Members and three of its members (Cook Islands, Niue, and Palestine) are not members of UN, while three UN members (Israel, Liechtenstein, United States) are not members of UNESCO.

 

About World Heritage Sites

  • The designation of World Heritage Sites is based on Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972.
  • The belief is that World Heritage sites belong to all the peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they are located.

About Hoysaleshvara temple:

  • Hoysaleshvara temple at Halebidu in Karnataka is built in dark schist stone by the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana in 1150.
  • Hoysala temples are known for their hybrid or vesara architecture which is a unique style that is neither completely Dravida nor Nagara, but somewhere in between.
  • The Hoysaleswara temple while being a Shaivism tradition monument, includes many themes from Vaishnavism and Shaktism tradition of Hinduism, as well as images from Jainism.
