The Oscars

  • The Oscars officially known as the Academy Awards are awards for artistic and technical merit for the American film industry.
  • They are presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in the month of January.
  • Only three Indian films have been nominated for Best International Feature at the Oscars so far, they are Mother India, Salaam Bombay and Lagaan.

History of Oscars

  • The first Oscars was held on May 16, 1929, at a private dinner function hosted by Douglas Fairbanks at The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with a small audience of around 270 people.
  • The Academy Awards ceremony was first broadcast by radio in 1930 and was televised for the first time in 1953 and currently is the oldest entertainment awards ceremony worldwide.

Indians who have won Oscars

Indians who have won Oscars include

  • Bhanu Athaiya for Best Costume Design for Gandhi in 1982.
  • Satyajit Ray was bestowed with an Honorary Academy Award in 1992.
  • Resul Pookutty won the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing in 2008 for Slumdog Millionaire.
  • A. R. Rahman won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2008 for Slumdog Millionaire.
  • A. R. Rahman and Gulzar shared the Best Original Song Award for the song “Jai Ho” in 2008.
