The Centre has sanctioned 116 new tourist destinations across India under various schemes in partnership with State governments.

What is Swadesh Darshan?

  • It is a 100% centrally funded scheme that was launched in 2014-15.
  • The scheme aims to develop theme-based circuits: Buddhist Circuit, Coastal Circuit, Desert Circuit, Eco Circuit, Heritage Circuit, Northeast Circuit, Himalayan Circuit, Sufi Circuit, Krishna Circuit, Ramayana Circuit, Rural Circuit, Spiritual Circuit, Tirthankar Circuit, Wildlife Circuit, and Tribal Circuit.
  • The scheme converges with other state and central government schemes to leverage the voluntary funding available for corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives of Central Public Sector Undertakings and Corporate Sector.
  • Objectives of the scheme:
    • To develop tourist circuits in places that have tourism potential.
    • Aims to make tourism a major source of economic growth.
    • Promote sustainable tourism and also to develop world-class infrastructure.

About Swadesh Darshan Scheme 2.0:

  • The revamped scheme mainly aims to attain “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” by realising India’s full potential as a tourism destination.
  • The aim of the scheme is to develop sustainable and responsible destinations.
  • The scheme will establish benchmarks and standards for both generic and theme-based tourism development, which states must follow while planning and executing projects.
  • Identified Tourism Themes: Major themes under the scheme include Culture and Heritage, Adventure Tourism, Eco-Tourism, Wellness Tourism, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) Tourism, Rural Tourism, Beach Tourism, and Cruises (Ocean & Inland).
