What is NATO?
- It is an intergovernmental military alliance whose primary goal is to provide collective defence against aggression and to address a range of security challenges beyond its original mandate.
- It was formed in 1949 with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington, D.C, to provide freedom and security, particularly from the Soviet Union, during the Cold War era.
- It initially had 12 founding member countries from Europe and North America.
- Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
- During the Cold War era, NATO provided security from the Soviet expansionism, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO expanded its focus to include crisis management, conflict prevention, and cooperative security efforts.
- Recently, on March 7, 2024, Sweden joined NATO to become its 32nd member.
