Etalin hydroelectric project

  • It was proposed to be developed as a joint venture between Jindal Power Ltd and the Hydropower Development Corporation of Arunachal Pradesh Ltd.
  • The plan was to combine two run-of-the-river schemes with limited storage by building concrete gravity dams on rivers Tangon and Dri in the Dibang Valley District of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has asked the Arunachal Pradesh government to scrap the project in its existing form but has not been scrapped entirely.
  • As per the detailed project report the project was to have an installed capacity of the project is 3097 MW.

The concerns

  • The project will displace local indigenous communities, such as the Idu Mishmi, from Dibang valley, which is a region of cultural reverence in the locality.
  • Ecological and environmental concerns include the loss of unique and endemic biodiversity including the tiger habitat.
  • The hydroelectric project will require clearing of 1,165.66 hectares of forest land in the region.
  • The project will expose the area to increased risk of Earthquakes.
  • It is located in the richest bio-geographical province of the Himalayan zone at the junction of major biogeographic zones like Palearctic Zone and Indo-Malayan Zone.
