APPROACH FOR ESSAY
Verbatim instructions by UPSC for essay is that: Candidates may be required to write essays on multiple topics. They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion, and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression.
If one analyses carefully, it becomes evident that UPSC is not testing candidate’s knowledge in Essay but clarity of thought, ability to write expressively creatively and concisely on the topic mentioned. This does not mean that Essay paper can be written with free mind and just by the use of distinct words sentences or quotes. With our experience, students who have not effectively prepared for essay paper have got really low scores around 80-100 and students who have dedicatedly prepared for Essay have consistently got 130-150 scores.
