DoT’s Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP)

Context:

Recently, the Union Minister launched the Department of Telecommunications’ Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP).

  • It is aimed to curb the misuse of telecom resources in cybercrime and financial fraud.

Facts for Prelims:

  • Broadband: Broadband is a data link enabling interactive services, such as Internet access, with a minimum download speed of 2 Mbps per individual subscriber, originating from the service provider’s point of presence (POP) dedicated to broadband provision.

Key Highlights:

  • In-order to empower citizens to proactively report suspected fraud communications, the minister also launched the ‘Chakshu’ facility on the Sanchar Saathi portal.
    • Chakshu means “eyes”.
  • The two portals of DIP and Chakshu are expected to further appreciably enhance the capacity and ability to check any kind of cyber security threat.

Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP):

  • It is developed by the Department of Telecommunications.
  • It ​​is a secure and integrated platform for real-time intelligence sharing, information exchange and coordination among the stakeholders i.e. Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), law enforcement agencies (LEAs), banks and financial institutions (FIs), social media platforms, identity document issuing authorities, etc.
  • It features information on the cases detected as misuse of telecom resources.
  • It also acts as a backend repository for the citizen-initiated requests on the Sanchar Saathi portal for action by the stakeholders.

‘Chakshu’:

  • Enables citizens to report fraudulent communications received via call, SMS, or WhatsApp aimed at deceiving individuals, such as claims regarding KYC updates, bank account alterations, SIM card changes, gas or electricity connections, sextortion, and impersonation scams, including those posing as government officials or relatives requesting money.
