Competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector

Context:

The government has approved nine new projects within the framework of the ‘Enhancement of Competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector’ initiative.

Main highlights:

  • In 2014, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) launched the scheme “Enhancement of Competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector” to cater to the infrastructure development and technological requirements of the Capital Goods Sector.

Under the Scheme, the following initiatives have been undertaken:

  • Establishment of 8 Centres of Excellence (CoEs) for technology development
  • Setting up of 15 Common Engineering Facility Centres (CEFCs), including four Industry 4.0 SAMARTH centres
  • Creation of 6 technology innovation platforms

Phase 2 of the scheme includes:

  • Approval for 9 projects to establish new advanced CoEs and enhance existing CoEs
  • Approval for 5 projects to set up new CEFCs and augment existing CEFCs
  • For the second phase, a total of Rs 326.14 crores has been sanctioned thus far.
