About Naxals:

  • The word Naxalism originated from the Naxalbari uprising of 1967.
  • The insurgency started in 1967 in the Naxalbari village of West Bengal by a radical faction of the Communist Party of India-(Marxist) led by Charu Majumdar, Kanu Sanyal, and Jangal Santhal.
  • They follow a Marxist–Leninist–Maoist ideology and aim to overthrow the Indian government and establish a communist government in the form of China or erstwhile Soviet Union.
  • They believe in Mao’s ideology of “Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun” and use guerrilla warfare against the government.
  • The areas where Naxalite–Maoist insurgency has the strongest presence is known as the Red Corridor.
  • Currently the number of most affected districts, accounting for 90% of the violent incidents, had reduced from 35 in 2015 to 25 in 2021.
  • These districts are mostly in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra, Telengana and Andhra Pradesh.
  • Government has initiated multiple military operations such as Operation Octopus, Double Bull, Thunderstorm and Chakarbandha against the Naxal threat.
  • Greyhounds is a police special forces unit of the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Police departments in India specialising in counterinsurgency operations against the Naxalites.
  •  Greyhounds as among the best anti-insurgency forces that specialises in anti-Maoist operations and as experts in jungle warfare.

About CRPF

  • The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is the premier central police force of the Union of India for internal security.
  • Originally constituted as the Crown Representative Police in 1939, it is one of the oldest Central paramilitary forces (now termed as Central Armed Police Force).
  • After Independence, the force was renamed as Central Reserve Police Force by an Act of Parliament on December 28, 1949.
  • CoBRA (COmmando Battalion for Resolute Action) is a special operation unit of CRPF proficient in guerrilla tactics and jungle warfare, created to counter Naxalites.
