AISHE
- All India Survey on Higher Education is an annual web-based survey released by the Union Ministry of Education since 2010-11.
- It helps by providing key performance indicators on the current status of Higher education in the country.
- The data collected through AISHE will be used to calculate indicators of educational development such as Institution Density, Gross Enrolment Ratio, Pupil-teacher ratio, Gender Parity Index, Per Student Expenditure etc.
Findings of the Survey
- When the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020-21, there was a 7% rise in enrolments in distance education programmes.
- In 2020-21 two lakh more Scheduled Caste students, about three lakh more Scheduled Tribe students and six lakh more Other Backward Classes students enrolled for higher education then the previous year.
- Compared to 2014-15 36 lakh (32%) more OBC students enrolled for higher education in 2020-21
- However, even though there was an increase in absolute numbers, the proportion of SC students dropped to 14.2% in 2020-21 from 14.7% in 2019-20.
- Also, the proportion of OBC students dropped to 35.8% in 2020-21 from 37% in 2019-20.
- Muslim studentβs proportion dropped to 4.6% in 2020-21 from 5.5% in 2019-20 while βother minority studentβsβ proportion fell to 2% from 2.3% in the same time period.
- Students in the Persons with Disabilities category saw a reduction in their number to 79,035 in 2020-21 from 92,831 in 2019-20.
- However, female enrolment had increased to 49% in 2020-21 from 45% in 2019-20.
- Undergraduate level saw the highest number of enrolments at about 78.9% followed by postgraduate level courses, which accounted for 11.4% of all enrolments in 2019-20.
- The number of universities has increased by 70, and the number of colleges has increased by 1,453 during 2020-21.
- SC and ST teachers continued to be under-represented across higher education institutes at only 9.1% to SC and 2.5% to ST category.
- There were about75 women teachers to every 100 male ones across institutes in the country.
