Context:

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Northeast’s first All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Changsari, near Guwahati.Among the several initiatives totaling more than 3,400 crores he initiated and dedicated to the nation in Assam were the AIIMS and a medical college in Kokrajhar, Nagaon, and Nalbari.

  • The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is a set of autonomous government public medical universities of higher education that are under the jurisdiction of the Government of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • An Act of Parliament designated these institutes as Institutes of National Importance. The forerunner institute, AIIMS New Delhi, was founded in 1956.
  • Since then, 24 new institutes have been announced. Twenty institutes are functioning as of January 2023, with four more slated to open by 2025. Six more AIIMS have been proposed.

  • Mr. Modi launched the Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHII) within the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati premises on Friday. The AAHII will be a medical sciences research and innovation complex with a 500-bed ‘linked’ multi-specialty hospital spread across 12 acres.
  • The Prime Minister also started the Aapke Dwar Ayushman campaign, handing out Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana cards to 1.1 crore eligible recipients.
  • Mr. Modi emphasized his government’s commitment to developing the Northeast and modernizing India’s health sector, noting that continuing initiatives have benefitted women’s health significantly.
  • He emphasized the need for development over dynastic, regional, corrupt, and unstable politics, and he mocked the Congress, which was once unbeatable in the Northeast.
  • Mr. Modi stated that his government has been working on 15 AIIMS since 2014 and that treatment and courses have already commenced in the majority of them.
  • The Prime Minister ascribed the Northeast’s improved road, rail, and airport facilities to the government’s service-oriented strategy.
