Adolescent Girls’ Club

Context

Recently, the Adolescent Girls’ Club was launched under Mission Shakti in Nagaland. It aims to empower girls aged 10–19 by enhancing their education, health awareness, and social skills.

About the Club and Its Key Features

  • It was launched on 5th October 2024 at Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Wokha, with 50 members.
  • It is being set up under both government and private schools across Nagaland.
  • Motto: “Live the Promise”—focusing on education, health, and leadership development.
  • Key Objectives:
    • Empowerment: Enhancing decision-making abilities through skill-building and mentorship.
    • Education: Providing academic support and life skills training.
    • Health Awareness: Focusing on reproductive health, nutrition, mental well-being, and substance abuse prevention.
    • Leadership Development: Encouraging leadership qualities through workshops and community engagement.
    • Social Well-being: Promoting community service and social responsibility.
  • Activities and Resources:
    • Workshops & training on health, education, and life skills.
    • Mentorship programmes to guide girls through adolescence.
    • Health camps & community projects for holistic development.
    • Creative Expression Workshops to nurture talents and confidence.
    • Adolescent Tool Kit (under development) to provide information on menstrual health, mental well-being, child abuse prevention, and helpline numbers.

Significance

  • Bridging Educational Gaps: The clubs ensure girls receive essential life skills alongside formal education.
  • Addressing Health Issues: Awareness about adolescent health reduces risks of malnutrition, early pregnancy, and substance abuse.
  • Social empowerment: Encouraging leadership and community participation fosters responsible citizens.
  • Psychosocial Support: Regular discussions help girls express concerns, seek guidance, and develop resilience.
  • Gender equity: Strengthening the role of young girls in decision-making and societal progress.
