UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Context:
- Two sites in Gujarat have made it to the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage sites: Vadnagar, and the Sun Temple of Modhera, both in the Mehsana district of northern Gujarat.
About Vadnagar:
- It is believed that Vadnagar, also known as Vridhanagar, Anandapur, Anantapur, and Nagar, has been continuously inhabited for more than 2,700 years.
- In 2006, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, several archaeological digs were under way there, highlighting the city as a Buddhist centre.
- The walls, arched entrances (toranas), temples, wells, homes (kothis), and unearthed sites like Buddhist monasteries and dedicated stupas reflect the influence of several cultural eras on the town’s architecture.
- The substantial water management system in this area has contributed to the ongoing success of the municipality.
Procedure Involved –
- A place having “outstanding universal importance” qualifies as a World Heritage Site would be considered.
- “Cultural and/or natural significance that is so outstanding as to transcend national boundaries and be of common interest for present and future generations of all humanity” is what this expression denotes.
- A tentative list is a “inventory” of sites a nation thinks should be listed as a World Heritage Site, in accordance with the World Heritage Convention’s operational requirements.
- A nation must create a nomination document for the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to review once UNESCO places a property on the Tentative List. A review and inspection by a representative of UNESCO will come after this.
