Formation of States post 1956

Gujrat (1960):

  • The Bombay state was separated into the State of Maharashtra and the State of Gujrat.
  • This was done under The Bombay Reorganisation Act, of 1960.

Nagaland (1963):

  • The state of Nagaland was created by taking out the Naga Hills-Tuensang area out of the State of Assam.
  • This was done under the State of Nagaland Act, 1962.

Haryana (1966):

  • Haryana was carved out of the Hindi speaking territories of Punjab state as an independent state in 1966.
  • This was done under the Punjab reorganization act, 1966.

Himachal Pradesh (1971):

  • Himachal Pradesh was formed into a Union territory under Punjab reorganization act, 1966.
  • The UT was given statehood in 1971.
  • This was done under the State of Himachal Pradesh Act, 1970.

Manipur (1972):

  • Manipur was given the status of Union Territory in 1956.
  • The UT was given statehood in 1972.
  • This was done under the North Eastern Region (Reorganisation) Act,1971.

Meghalaya (1972):

  • Meghalaya was initially part of the state of Assam till 1970.
  • It was given autonomous status on 1970 by the Constitution (22nd Amendment) Act 1969 and was given complete statehood in 1972.
  • This was done under the North Eastern Region (Reorganisation) Act,1971.

Tripura (1972):

  • Tripura was given the status a Union Territory on 1956
  • The UT was given statehood in 1972.
  • This was done under the North Eastern Region (Reorganisation) Act,1971.

Sikkim (1975):

  • Sikkim was Indian princely state ruled by Chogyal dynasty, and became a Protectorate of India from 1947.
  • Sikkim was given the status of an ‘associate State’ by the Constitution (35th Amendment) Act, 1974.
  • It gained full statehood by Constitution (36th amendment) Act, 1975.

Goa (1987):

  • Goa remained as a Portuguese colony post-independence till 1961.
  • Goa was liberated by the Indian army as part of Operation Vijay in 1961 and was granted the status of a Union Territory.
  • In 1987, Goa was granted full statehood in the Union of India.

Arunachal Pradesh (1987):

  • The present state of Arunachal Pradesh was established as the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA) in 1954.
  • North-East Frontier Agency was renamed into Arunachal Pradesh and granted the status of a Union Territory in 1972.
  • Arunachal Pradesh gained full statehood on 20 February 1987.

Mizoram (1987):

  • Mizoram was initially part of the state of Assam.
  • In 1972 it was declared a Union Territory.
  • Mizoram got the statehood on 20 February 1987.

Chhattisgarh (2000):

  • Chhattisgarh was carved out of the territories of the Madhya Pradesh on1 November 2000.
  • This was done under the Madhya Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000.

Jharkhand (2000):

  • This state was separated from the tribal dominated areas of Bihar.
  • Jharkhand got full statehood on 15 November 2000.
  • This was done under the Bihar reorganization act, 2000.

Uttarakhand (2000):

  • This state was separated from the hilly areas of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Uttarakhand got full statehood on 9th of November 2000.

Telangana (2014):

  • Telangana was created out of Telugu-speaking areas of Hyderabad state.
  • Telangana full statehood on 2 June 2014.
  • This was done under the Andhra Pradesh reorganization act, 2014.
