DRDO:

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation works under the administrative control of Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
  • DRDO has been created as the Research and Development wing of the Ministry of Defence and its vision is to empower India with cutting-edge defence technologies.
  • Its aim is to achieve self-reliance in critical defence technologies and systems while equipping India’s armed forces with state-of-the-art weapon systems and equipment in accordance with requirements laid down by the three Services.
  • DRDO was formed in 1958 from the amalgamation of some of the existing R&D organisations.
  • They are Technical Development Establishment (TDE) of the Indian Army and the Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTDP) with the Defence Science Organisation (DSO).
  • DRDO currently has a network of more than 50 laboratories engaged in developing defence technologies covering various disciplines.

  • aeronautics, armaments, information systems, combat vehicles, engineering systems, instrumentation, special materials, advanced computing and simulation, missiles, naval systems, life sciences, training, electronics, and agriculture

Success stories of DRDO

DRDO has successfully completed development of multiple indigenous technologies such as:

  • Agni and Prithvi series of Ballistic missiles;
  • NAG anti-tank missiles;
  • Astra air to air missiles;
  • Tejas light combat aircraft;
  • Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher;
  • Akash air defence system;
  • a wide range of radars and electronic warfare systems
