Vaccines bought first using PM CARES funds cost more

The first lot of vaccines was procured by the Centre using PM CARES funds at a rate higher than the subsequent rounds paid for with budgetary allocations, The Hindu has learnt from the response to a Right to Information request by a transparency activist.

  • Chaired by the Prime Minister, PM CARES is a public charitable trust. Other Members include Defence Minister, Home Minister and Finance Minister.
  • Micro-donations are enabled in PM CARES. Hence, a large number of people will be able to contribute with the smallest of denominations.
  • The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has clarified that contributions by companies towards the PM-CARES Fund will count towards mandatory Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) expenditure.
