Context

  • The Prime Minister launched Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 and AMRUT 2.0.

Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0

  • Mission Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT) intends to Improve sewage and septic management, making our cities water-safe cities and ensuring that no sewage drains anywhere in our rivers.
  • AMRUT 2.0 mission will aid in making cities self-reliant.  
  • It aims to provide 100% coverage of water supply to all households in 4,700 urban local bodies. 
  • This target will be achieved by: 
    • Facilitating 2.68 crore tap connections and 100% coverage of sewerage across 500 AMRUT cities. 
    • Rs 2.87 lakh crore fund has been sanctioned for this mission. 
  • GoI launched the AMRUT Mission with the aim of providing basic civic amenities like water supply, sewerage, urban transport, parks as to improve the quality of life for all especially the poor and the disadvantaged. 
  • The mission focuses on infrastructure development that has a direct link to provision of better services to the citizens.
  • Purpose of “AMRUT” mission is to 
    • Ensure that every household has access to a tap with assured supply of water and a sewerage connection 
    • Increase the amenity value of cities by developing greenery and well maintained open spaces e.g. parks and 
    • Reduce pollution by switching to public transport or constructing facilities for non-motorized transport e.g. walking and cycling.
