News : The massive reverse migration of people from urban areas to villages ever since lockdown was imposed due to COVID-19 has put focus on the Attracting and Retaining Youth in Agriculture (ARYA) scheme of the Centre with several experts suggesting that time is now ideal to go for full-fledged implementation of the ambitious scheme. 

  • ARYA scheme is presently being implemented in 100 districts in the country on an experimental basis.  
  • The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) took up this initiative several years ago following report by a committee of experts that looked into ways and means of wooing rural youth to agriculture and allied sectors by ensuring a dignified life for them in villages. 

The objectives of ARYA Scheme 

  • To attract and empower the Youth in Rural Areas to take up various Agriculture, allied and service sector enterprises for sustainable income and gainful employment in selected districts, 
  • To enable the Farm Youth to establish network groups to take up resource and capital intensive activities like processing, value addition and marketing, and 
  • To demonstrate functional linkage with different institutions and stakeholders for convergence of opportunities available under various schemes/program for sustainable development. 
  • Implemented via Krishi Vigyan Kendras (One in each district) 
  • Training given in Apiary, Mushroom, Seed Processing, Soil testing, Poultry, Dairy, Goatry, Carp-hatchery,Vermi-compost etc 
  • The trained young entrepreneurs would be assisted in preparing project reports for seeking bank loans. 
  • The AMATHON was a three-day International Agricultural Trade Summit, held at IIM Ahmedabad from in January 2016. 
  • The main objective of the ARYA scheme will be to promote the green revolution in the state. 
  • Under the scheme, Agriculture Technology Management and Training (ATMA) will provide training to the rural youth.
